Property Tax Calculator

Property tax calculator

Get a rough idea of your yearly property tax, worked out from the usual rate in your county.

Pick your state and county, then type a home value to see the yearly bill.

This figure is only an estimate and is not your actual bill. The county puts a value on your home for tax. Your city, your county and the local school district then each add a tax of their own. Check with your county first, before paying or before asking for a review of the value of your home.

These numbers cover homes lived in by their owners. These numbers come from a large Census Bureau home survey covering US homes from 2020 to 2024. The usual bill is the one in the middle: half of owners pay more and half pay less. At a 1% rate, you pay about $1 in tax each year for every $100 of a home's value.

Lower your bill, or plan ahead for it

Homestead exemption

For the home where you live, a homestead exemption lowers your tax bill by not taxing part of its value. Look up your state’s exemption amount and sign-up date. In Texas, school taxes leave out $140,000 of your home's value.

Appeal deadlines

To appeal, you ask your county to take another look at what it says your home is worth. If that amount seems too high, look up your state's deadline and put the date in your calendar.

When property taxes are due

Look up the due date in each state, how many payments the bill is split into, and what happens when a payment is late.
